I find the political fallout from the Roe v. Wade thing curious.

For instance, the Netherlands has issued a statement condemning the decision. It seems like every other Western leader has done something similar with the feel of “oh those primitive Americans”.

The main issue I have is that the decision in the US was procedurally sound and constitutional. Furthermore it was a court decision, not one politician’s fiat. Are these European leaders suggesting that Biden dissolve the Supreme Court and suspend the constitution?

It’s also odd because there are EU states that outlaw or severely restrict abortion. Even Florida’s much maligned restrictions on abortion are more permissive than Germany’s. Why are European leaders so concerned about access to abortion in the US when there are plenty of places inside the EU with limited abortion rights?

My own position is libertarian: healthcare decisions should be made by doctors and patients. This includes the bodily autonomy of pregnancy, vaccination, wearing a mask or deciding when to end one’s life. I’d wholeheartedly support a constitutional amendment for bodily autonomy. But let’s do it the right way. Start out locally and when there’s overwhelming support across the country add it to the constitution.
