The issues
I mailed in my ballot for the upcoming US election.
Unfortunately none of the candidates are interested in some of the issues that I think would lead to large quality of life improvements. So I voted for those whom I considered to be the least worst. Alas.
I think good urbanism could be a defining issue: not building car centric cities means that people move more, which dramatically improves health levels. People get out and mix more, expanding minds, sparking creativity and building culture. The energy and environmental problems are much easier to solve when daily commuting needs don’t depend on every person needing a car.
Here’s a good Twitter thread about a placing a crosswalk and its effect on the community. That’s what I want to hear politicians talking about.
And let’s not make this a partisan issue. Carmel, Indiana which is as red as they come has some of American suburbia’s best bicycle infrastructure. Plenty of blue areas are as car-centric as they come.
