Spiraling complexity
For those of us who have been around tech for decades, it’s been wild to watch just how much more complex everything has become. And a lot of this complexity is entirely needless. You don’t need a frontend framework, a ton of JS, and several MBs to serve a webpage that’s mostly text.
And because everything is so complex, it’s all very fragile. Nobody has a good overview of how everything works. You need a team to just keep the lights on.
Whenever you mention that something is wrong with all of this, people look at you like you’re some sort of luddite wanting to destroy progress and innovation.
Few explain this as well as Maciej Cegłowski of Pinboard fame. Treat yourself to reading all of The Lunacy of Artemis.
